On Pubslush and Inkubate

So, the endless rounds of querying can get you down. Self-publishing is an option, but it's highly labour intensive and you have to do a lot of the work yourself. Yesterday I read an article in The Huffington Post talking about Inkubate and Pubslush.

Now these endeavours aren't new, I've read about them before. I'm not sure their methods are going to get that much traction. How many people would think a book premise was that good that they'd preorder it without being sure that they'd ever see the actual book in question. It might work for established authors, but maybe not so well for newbies.

What do you all think?

Sorry for the brevity of this post, I'm learning the art of typing with a baby on my shoulder. I'm sure I'll get better at it :)

  1. I agree - not many people would be likely to pre-order a book by an unknown author... I know I wouldn't, and I'm all for supporting indies.

    Good luck with the multi-tasking!

  2. Have I misunderstood Inkubate? Publishers and Agents will pay a small fee to read what is essentially a slush pile? Or they could read their own slush pile that they get sent for free. I must be reading it wrong.

Hope Polly is doing well :-)

  3. I think what Sarah said is correct. Why pay for a slush pile when they can read their own for free?

I suppose that I can see a few success stories rising from these websites, but overall I don't see them doing much good.

And good luck with learning how to type with a baby on the shoulder! You'll get better at it, promise ;)

  4. Hmmm, is there any fine, fine print? Not so sure about this venture.

  5. Yeah, I can't see either of these taking off that greatly... Pubslush is a nice idea--I actually really like it, but if you can lure 2000 buyers, I'd think you would be better off hiring an editor and self-publishing. The Inkubate, I have a hard time imagining agents or publishers PAYING to see slush when they can see it for free otherwise.

  6. I can't see either of these two being good for you. You will get published, I just know it!

I hope Polly Pocket is doing well and you are adjusting to each other. How cool to have a baby on your shoulder and typing. What a beautiful picture that would be!

  7. Yeah, I barely pre-order books from authors whose work I like! Even deciding to buy books from debut authors is a thought-intensive process. I'm intrigued by a lot of blurbs, so I have to be choosey as to which books I actually end up buying (otherwise I'd be so very broke).

I'm not familiar with either of these ventures though and will go take a looksie.

  9. Typing while holding children is a neat trick. Harder to learn than juggling.

    I launched a giveaway today! :)

  10. Good luck with your juggling act! :)

You know, I don't think self-publishing is as difficult as it used to be--if you go direct to Kindle. I did it myself a couple of months ago. I just don't want to mess with the print side of things. Still doing traditional publishing, too, but I want to have all my irons in the fire.

  11. I know quite a few people who have chosen to self-publish. There's quite a support network out there. As you say, the endless rounds of querying can certainly get you down, so maybe self-publishing is an option?

  12. PubSlush. I mean. The name. The connotations. Inkubate? Has an industry ever taken off on a weak pun? Hi by the way. Linked from the Tart's blog.

  14. I'm surprised that people are reluctant to take a look at the work of lesser known authors. There are so many gems to be found out there and I must say, they do indeed stack up to anything produced by big name authors and publishing houses.

Self publishing to, is a much easier process than what it was even 12 months ago. You just need to know where to look. Publish. Get yourself out there. Don't sit by and wait and hope.
